Turkey eSIM questions, answered

What travellers ask us before and during a trip — the rules in Turkey, the plans, installation and support.

Turkey rules and access

Is eSIM banned in Turkey?

No. eSIM technology is legal and works normally. What has been blocked since July 2025 is the websites and apps of more than 50 international eSIM sellers. An eSIM installed before arrival keeps working; what breaks is buying a new one or topping up an existing one once you are in the country.

Can I buy an eSIM after I land in Turkey?

With most providers, no — you will not be able to open their site or app. That is exactly the gap we exist to close: our shop and checkout are reachable from a Turkish connection, including airport Wi‑Fi.

My eSIM from another provider ran out in Turkey. What can I do?

You will not be able to open their site to top it up. You can install one of ours next to it — most phones hold several eSIMs — and move mobile data to the new line. Nothing has to be deleted.

Do I have to register my phone with the IMEI system?

Not for a normal holiday. Turkey requires foreign handsets to be registered after 120 days of use on Turkish networks, which affects long stays and residents. A travel eSIM used for a trip stays inside the roaming framework.

Does EU roaming cover Turkey?

No. Turkey is outside the EU “roam like at home” zone, so a European or UK allowance generally does not apply and operators charge a daily fee or per-megabyte rates. Check your operator's Turkey rate before you rely on it.

Why does my IP address show the Netherlands?

Travel eSIMs route your data through a gateway outside the country you are visiting; ours reaches the internet in the Netherlands. Some websites may therefore greet you in Dutch or ask you to confirm your location. That is normal and does not affect your speed allowance.

Plans and data

Which Turkish network will I connect to?

Türk Telekom, one of Turkey's three national operators. Your phone picks the fastest technology available, up to 5G.

How much data do I need for a week in Turkey?

Light use — maps, messaging, email — is about 0.3 GB a day. Add social media and music and it is closer to 1 GB a day; video, video calls or a laptop on hotspot can reach 3 GB a day. For a week that means roughly 2, 7 or 21 GB. The plans page has a table for other trip lengths.

When does my plan start counting?

At the first connection to a Turkish network — not when you pay and not when you install. You can install the profile up to 180 days ahead, which is why we tell everyone to do it before the flight.

Can I top up when my data runs out?

Yes. Data plans can be topped up on the same eSIM — no new QR code — and the unlimited plan can be extended by days. Because we operate from Turkey, the top-up page opens on your Turkish connection.

Is the unlimited plan really unlimited?

There is no hard cap and no overage charge, but there is a fair-use threshold: 3 GB per day at full speed, after which the connection continues at 1 Mbps until the next day. That is enough for maps, messaging and music, but not for HD video.

Can I use my phone as a hotspot?

Yes. Tethering is allowed on every plan, so a laptop, a tablet or a travel partner can share the connection. Hotspot traffic comes out of the same data allowance.

What happens to data I do not use?

It expires with the plan and is not refunded. Validity is a maximum, not a commitment, so choose a plan by how much data you expect to use rather than by the number of days.

Phones and installation

Which phones support eSIM?

Most phones released from 2018 onwards, including iPhone XS/XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer. The handset must also be carrier-unlocked. Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM.

Does my phone need to be unlocked?

Yes. A phone locked to your home operator cannot use another provider's eSIM. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked; if yours came with a contract, ask your operator before you travel.

Can I install the eSIM before I travel?

Yes, and you should. Installing needs an internet connection, so home Wi‑Fi is the easy place to do it. The plan does not start until the eSIM connects to a Turkish network, and you can install up to 180 days ahead.

Can I keep my normal SIM active at the same time?

Yes. Keep your home SIM for calls and SMS and set the Turkey eSIM as the line for mobile data. Turn off data roaming on the home SIM so it cannot run up charges in the background.

Should I delete the eSIM after my trip?

Only once the plan is over. While it is active, do not remove it from your phone: a QR code can generally be installed only once. After the trip you can delete the line in your phone's SIM settings.

Calls, numbers and apps

Do I get a Turkish phone number?

No. These are data-only plans. Your existing number stays on your normal SIM for calls and SMS, and WhatsApp, Telegram and iMessage keep working over the eSIM data.

Will WhatsApp keep my number?

Yes. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and iMessage are tied to your own number, not to the line that carries the data. If an app asks whether to switch to a new number, keep the current one.

How do I make calls in Turkey?

Over data: WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram and similar apps work as they do at home. Ordinary calls and SMS still go through your home SIM at your operator's roaming rates.

Orders and support

How fast do I get my eSIM?

The QR code and the manual activation codes are sent by email within seconds of payment. There is no app to install and no account to create.

I did not get the email. What now?

Check the spam and promotions folders first. If it is not there, email us from the address you ordered with and we will send it again.

Which currencies can I pay in?

Pounds, euros or US dollars. Use the language and currency menu at the top of the page; every price on the site follows your choice.

How do I reach support from inside Turkey?

By email. This site and our support are reachable on Turkish mobile networks and Wi‑Fi, so you do not need a VPN or a workaround to contact us.

Still have a question?

Email us and we will answer from Istanbul.

Choose a plan

Will my phone work?

Two checks, less than a minute.

  1. 1

    Dial *#06#

If an EID number shows up on the screen, your phone supports eSIM.

  2. 2

    Make sure it is unlocked

A phone locked to your home operator cannot use another provider's eSIM. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked; if yours came with a contract, ask your operator.
