The short answer
From most international sellers, no: since July 2025 their websites and apps do not open on a Turkish connection, so you never reach the checkout. From a shop that is reachable inside Turkey, yes — you need a few minutes of Wi‑Fi to pay and install, and the airport provides that.
- An eSIM you installed before flying keeps working. The block is on shops, not on the technology.
- Installing an eSIM needs an internet connection, so the first step is Wi‑Fi. At Istanbul Airport it is free.
- Our shop opens on Turkish networks, and the eSIM arrives by email within seconds of payment.
- No passport and no queue — the two things a SIM kiosk in the arrivals hall will ask of you.
Why the app will not open
Since July 2025 Turkey's telecoms regulator has blocked access, from inside the country, to the websites and apps of more than 50 international eSIM sellers. The eSIMs themselves were left alone: one that is already on your phone connects as normal. What stopped working is everything that needs the seller's shop — buying a plan, topping one up, opening a support chat.
So the traveller who installed at home notices nothing, and the traveller who planned to sort it out on arrival is stuck at the first step. The full background is in our guide Is eSIM banned in Turkey?
What you need to buy one at the airport
- Wi‑Fi. An eSIM is downloaded, so the phone has to be online to install it. Istanbul Airport offers free, unlimited Wi‑Fi on the network “iGA WiFi”: you get an access code by SMS, or by scanning your passport at one of the Wi‑Fi kiosks if your home SIM is not receiving texts.
- A phone that takes eSIM and is not locked to your operator. Dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, the phone supports eSIM. Our how it works page lists supported models.
- A payment card and your email on the same phone, because that is where the eSIM arrives.
From the arrivals hall to online, step by step
Get on the airport Wi‑Fi
Pick the airport network, open any web page and follow the login. Keep your normal SIM's data roaming switched off while you do this, so it cannot start charging you in the background.
Choose a plan
Open our plans. For a week or two of ordinary use — maps, messages, social media — 10 GB for €3.99 is what most people pick. Plans start from €2.99.
Pay and open the email
Enter your email address, confirm your phone is eSIM-ready and pay. The email with your eSIM arrives within seconds. Check the spam folder if it does not.
Install it
Use the press-and-hold or the manual-entry route described above. Label the new line “Turkey”.
Switch it on
Select the Turkey line for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. It finds the network within a minute, and that first connection is the moment your plan's validity starts.
Your other options once you have landed
An eSIM from a shop that opens in Turkey is not the only way to get online. These are the others, with their catch:
| Option | What it takes | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| A SIM card from an airport kiosk | Your passport, a queue and a few minutes of paperwork. | Airport kiosks charge more than the same operators' shops in town, and the line is registered to your passport. Details in Turkey SIM card vs eSIM. |
| Roaming on your home SIM | Nothing: switch on data roaming. | Turkey is outside the EU roaming zone, so most UK and European plans charge by the day. See roaming charges in Turkey. |
| Your usual eSIM app, bought by someone at home | A friend outside Turkey who buys the plan and forwards you the QR code. | It works — once. If the data runs out, you are asking them again. |
| A VPN to reach your usual eSIM app | A VPN that was installed before you arrived, and a connection to run it on. | Which is the thing you do not have yet. Payment pages also tend to refuse VPN traffic. |
If the eSIM you brought has run out
This is the more common version of the same problem: the eSIM worked, the data is gone on day five, and the provider's top-up page does not load. You do not need to remove anything. Most phones hold several eSIMs, so you can install a second one next to the first and move mobile data to the new line in your settings.
Our own plans can be topped up from inside Turkey for the same reason you can buy them here: the shop stays reachable.
The easier way: install before you fly
Everything above works, but it is a job to do standing in an arrivals hall. If you are reading this before your trip, buy now and install on your home Wi‑Fi. Installing does not start the clock: validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a network in Turkey, and you have 180 days to make that first connection. You land, switch the line on and walk out online.
Questions people ask
Can I buy an Airalo or Holafly eSIM once I am in Turkey?
Not from a Turkish connection: their websites and apps are among those blocked since July 2025. An eSIM from them that you installed before arriving keeps working; buying a new one or topping up is what fails.
Do I need a passport to buy an eSIM in Turkey?
Not for a travel eSIM bought online — there is no ID check. You do need your passport to buy a physical SIM card, or an eSIM, directly from a Turkish operator, because that line is registered to you.
Is there free Wi‑Fi at Istanbul Airport to set it up?
Yes. The airport announced free and unlimited Wi‑Fi in November 2024. You receive an access code by SMS, or by scanning your passport at a Wi‑Fi kiosk in the terminal.
How long does it take?
About five minutes once you are on Wi‑Fi: a minute or two to pay, a few seconds for the email, and a couple of minutes to install and switch the line on.
Will an eSIM bought in Turkey work for my whole trip?
Yes. Coverage is nationwide, and the plan runs for its full validity from the first connection. If you use the data up, you can top up the same eSIM from inside Turkey.
